Feasibility study for tip in north Dudley proposed

A proposal to appoint a specialist consultancy firm to look at the feasibility of a new household waste recycling centre in north Dudley is to go before cabinet next week.

If approved, the council will appoint an environmental and waste management consultancy to carry out a feasibility study, assessing available land suitable for waste handling and for housing a new household waste recycling centre in north Dudley.

In recent years Dudley Council has considered several options for an additional site to serve residents in the north of the borough. A number of sites were investigated as part of the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) Future Provision Project, with most discounted due to land availability, traffic concerns, planning issues, cost or site constraints.

The council also held discussions with Wolverhampton City Council over allowing controlled access to its Anchor Lane facility. However, earlier this year Wolverhampton confirmed it was not currently able to provide access to Dudley residents.

In the meantime, the council has established four pop up tips a month, alternating between the Northway street scene depot in north Dudley and Lister Road depot, providing more than 1,000 slots a month for residents.

Councillor Damian Corfield, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “We are committed to finding a positive long-term solution for residents in the north of the borough.

“We know they want a convenient and accessible recycling facility closer to home and this feasibility study would be a step towards assessing and understanding the options.

“In the meantime, our popular pop-up tips will continue to provide a valuable local service while we explore a longer-term solution towards improving local access and recycling services for residents.”

All slots at the pop-up tips must be booked in advance. Residents who have reserved slots but no longer need them are reminded to cancel them to improve capacity and reduce wait times for other tip users.
