Food and culture take centre stage at The Link Academy

Learners at The Link Academy recently celebrated their much-anticipated annual Cultural Week, a vibrant event that celebrates the many cultures that make up the school.

One of the biggest highlights of the week was the Cultural Day Fashion Show that took place on 23rd March where learners proudly showcased traditional outfits and cultural designs from countries such as Britain, Pakistan, Ghana, and Jamaica.

A distinctive feature of the show was the range of British-inspired designs and upcycled clothes created by learners themselves.

The fashion show welcomed a number of special guests including the Mayor of Dudley, Cllr Pete Lee; CEO of Dudley Academies Trust, Jo Higgins; Netherton and Holly Hall, Cllr Qasim Mughal and High Sheriff of the West Midlands, Mark Smith.

On Tuesday, learners took part in a staff question and answer session about culture and identity. Staff shared how their own cultural backgrounds have shaped their lives and spoke about what they are most proud of. During Personal Development lessons, learners explored the meaning and history of the word “culture.”

Wednesday saw the school transform into a “Global Village.” Learners prepared food from a range of cultures for others to taste. From Victoria sponge cake to samosas and pizza, learners enjoyed trying a variety of snacks and learning about the cultures behind them.

Cultural Week is an important tradition at The Link Academy. It provides learners with opportunities to celebrate diversity, explore different cultures and reflect on what it means to be part of modern Britain. Each year, the celebration allows staff and learners to celebrate their identities and recognise the shared values that bring them together.

Emma Edwards-Morgan, Principal at the Link Academy said: “Every year, our Cultural Celebration event goes from strength to strength. This year was our best yet, where our school community really embraced the opportunity to share their cultural roots in so many ways over the course of the week.

"At a time where there is so much negative news out there about hatred and conflict, The Link Academy has yet again shown that our own inclusive culture, is one where everyone feels respected, valued, and included, whatever their background or identity.

"The events have really embodied one of our core values; respecting each other and our world. I am incredibly proud of our learners and staff.”
