Groups urged to bid for slice of new £200k Covid cash pot

Waheed Saleem, Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner

Local organisations and community groups helping the vulnerable in the borough during the coronavirus pandemic are being urged to apply for a slice of a new £200,000 cash pot.

West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, David Jamieson, has made the funds available over the next six months following a surge in voluntary and community activity to help those most at risk.

The new Community Initiatives Fund, which came into effect last week, is being funded from money seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act. Community organisations can bid for funding of up to £5,000. Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of Dudley Council, said:

"We have already seen countless examples of amazing work being done in the community to support our most vulnerable, from taking free school meals to delivering essential medical supplies.

"This cash is available to help groups and organisations who have really stepped up during this crisis to continue their excellent work, and I would urge people from the borough to apply."

Waheed Saleem, Deputy West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, added:

"We have launched this fund to support groups in Dudley and across the West Midlands to help their local communities through Covid-19. This really is a wonderful way to say ‘thank you’ in a practical way to all those people who are rapidly responding and organising in new ways to connect with each other within their communities.

"Through neighbourhood policing, I want to encourage and support community initiatives and networks that are enterprising. I want to hear from people about how they now provide new solutions to reach the vulnerable, how they protect them from threats and harm and to help them thrive despite the current restrictions. I also want to know how we can support them."
