Halesowen Abbey Trust is marking its 40th anniversary by launching ‘40 at 40’, an ambitious fundraising campaign aiming to raise £40,000 to support the future of local conservation.
Funds will also support its flagship project, the Leasowes Walled Garden, which was granted Grade II listed status in December 2025.
Founded in 1986, the Trust has spent four decades campaigning to protect Halesowen’s countryside and green spaces. One of its most significant milestones was the purchase of the 18th-century Leasowes Walled Garden in 2014, securing the site as a lasting public asset. Originally built in 1776, the garden remains an important part of the area’s historic landscape.
The Trust’s 40th anniversary coincides with the 250th anniversary of both the walled garden and American independence. In 1786, a decade after Edward Horne built the garden, The Leasowes estate welcomed future American presidents Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, who admired the landscape originally designed by poet William Shenstone between 1743 and 1763.
Mick Freer, one of the founders and Honorary Secretary of Halesowen Abbey Trust said: “This anniversary is not only a moment to reflect on what has been achieved, but a chance to protect what matters to us all.
"The Leasowes Walled Garden is dedicated to public benefit in perpetuity – it is part of our shared story – and its restoration shows what is possible when a community comes together to care deeply about the places that shape it.
“Every pound you give will help protect these landscapes, open them up to more people, and support the volunteers whose time, passion, and dedication bring them to life – securing the long-term sustainability of the Trust's work. Together, we can ensure these places are not only preserved, but continue to inspire future generations.
“If you value green spaces, local heritage, and the power of community, we invite you to be part of 40 at 40 – and help keep these special places alive for years to come.”
The campaign will be highlighted at a celebratory open day on Saturday 27 June, from 10am to 4pm at the Leasowes Walled Garden. Held ahead of the Trust’s official anniversary in September, the event will bring together those who have shaped its journey and those who will help shape its future.
Over the coming months, the Trust will share stories from its 40-year history, expand opportunities for volunteering and prearranged guided tours, and invite individuals, schools, and local businesses to support the appeal in a variety of ways – from donations and 40-themed challenges to volunteering and spreading the word.
