Author, actor and comedian Sir Lenny chose Dudley Library to launch his new children’s picture book, You Can Do Anything, Tyrone!

Sir Lenny, who grew up in Dudley, has frequently talked about how much he visited the library after his Aunty Pearl enrolled him as a member of the library.

This was his first visit as an author and Sir Lenny even took the opportunity to sign up as a member. Sir Lenny said:

"How brilliant to be back in Dudley Library to launch my book ‘You Can Do Anything, Tyrone!’

"It was fabulous to be there with super talented illustrator Salomey Doku who’s really brought Tyrone and his story to life. Families were queuing down the street, thanks so much for coming!

"If you couldn’t be there remember all my books are in stock in all of Dudley’s libraries ready to borrow and read over the holidays!"

The event included a reading by Sir Lenny to an audience of around 70 made up of local children and their families. Sir Lenny answered questions about his memories of Dudley library, his inspirational Aunty Pearl and spoke about the adventures of Tyrone and his granddad.

He also talked about the importance of reading and encouraged children to sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge. After the reading Sir Lenny signed books for his audience before a public book signing at noon, with families queuing out the door as they waited for their books to be signed.

There were book themed crafts inspired by Tyrone’s adventures, with children making their own spaceships and postcards to record their imaginary journeys. You Can Do Anything, Tyrone! is illustrated by new talent Salomey Doku, who was also at the event.

The story focuses on the special bond between a boy called Tyrone and his grandfather, Grandad Cleveland, who gives Tyrone self-confidence and the belief that he can indeed be and do anything he wants. Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of Dudley Council, said:

"We’re really grateful to Sir Lenny for choosing Dudley library to launch his new children’s book. Reading can open so many doors, teaching children empathy, imagination and understanding.

"This is a beautiful, funny and thoughtful book and I’m glad to add it to our fantastic library stock, alongside Sir Lenny’s other children’s books."
