Labour councillors have called on Dudley Council to grant Freedom of the Borough to Jude Bellingham following his 'exceptional' role during the 2026 world cup.
Born in Stourbridge, Jude’s rise from a local youngster to one of the world’s most celebrated footballers is a remarkable story of talent, dedication and humility.
Representatives fro the Labour groups say Jude has represented his country with distinction, excelled at the highest levels of the global game, and inspired countless young people who see in him a powerful example of what can be achieved through hard work and belief.
Jude’s influence extends beyond football. His professionalism, resilience and conduct make him an outstanding role model for young people across Dudley.
His achievements have already been recognised locally, including through the mural at Ryemarket shopping centre in Stourbridge.
The Freedom of the Borough is one of the highest honours the council can bestow, reserved for individuals whose achievements bring distinction to the borough and inspire others. The Labour Group believes Jude embodies these qualities fully.
Cllr Qasim Mughal, Deputy Leader of the Dudley Labour Group said: “Jude represents the very best of our borough. His journey from Stourbridge to the world stage shows young people that greatness is possible with hard work, dedication and commitment.
"Awarding him the Freedom of the Borough would not only honour his incredible achievements but also celebrate the pride he brings to our communities.
“Jude is a role model in every sense, and Dudley should recognise the impact he continues to have on the next generation.”
Stourbridge MP, Cat Eccles has also shown her support for the honour. She added: “Bellingham has been outstanding in this tournament so far and in previous years.
“He is a fantastic role model for young people and gives the whole area a sense of pride to see a local man achieving his dreams on the world stage.
“It would be wonderful to honour his achievement by bestowing the Freedom of the Borough on him.”
A formal request has now been submitted to the council for consideration.
