Work on Dudley’s new ice rink could start next spring if borough planners give their blessing to the scheme.

The £9m project in Flood Street has long been hailed as the first stage of a major redevelopment in Dudley town centre.

The authority’s leader, Cllr Patrick Harley, believes the rink could be open for business in around 12 months.

Cllr Harley said: “Fun City opens shortly which will generate footfall and improve the visitor economy in Dudley town centre.

“Alongside that we have the planning application for the much talked about ice rink due in January.

“Hopefully, building on that will start next springtime and be open by the end of next year.”

The ice rink could attract up to a quarter of a million people every year to Dudley according an economic impact assessment prepared for the council.

The 2,000 seater facility is also predicted to create more than 100 jobs and bring a £30m boost to the town’s economy.

Cllr Harley added: “It will also create jobs for our residents, as well as giving us a state-of-the-art arena to host other events like boxing matches or concerts. The icing on the cake would be the creation of a professional ice hockey team based in Dudley for fans to cheer on.

“It is a no-brainer for me and a project I have been driving for several years, so I am delighted to see it is coming closer to fruition.”

Fun City is a multi-activity centre based in the former Dudley Museum building on St James Road.

It will feature attractions including a Laser Quest arena, multi-sports simulators, escape rooms, karaoke and a private party room.

Fun City will be part of a new Entertainment Quarter in and around Stone Square which includes the new Glass House bar and a hotel development.

Hayley Andrews, co-director of Hush Property Developments, the group behind the £4m redevelopment, said: “This project is close to our hearts, blending our enthusiasm for development with a genuine affection for the town’s heritage, and owning a piece of it is a real honour.

“We’re not just business owners; we’re part of the Dudley community, committed to breathing new life into it.”
