Man Jailed After Deliberately Starting Fire On Plane

A 46-year-old Kidderminster man who started two fires on a Monarch Airlines flight which had taken off from Birmingham Airport has been jailed for four and a half years.

John Cox admitted arson after starting one of the fires while the aircraft was at 35,000 feet on a flight to Sharm el-Sheikh in August 2015, causing the captain to declare a mayday.

A court heard that the first fire at the rear of the aircraft was started around an hour into the flight, followed by a second one three hours later.

The plane, which had 194 passengers on board, landed safely without incident.
