May Day merriment for families at Avoncroft Museum

Traditional maypole and music at Avoncroft Museum

Avoncroft Museum will be re-living some of Britain’s most time-honoured rural traditions this May Bank Holiday, with its special May Day event taking place from 10.30am on Monday 7th May.

This  popular annual event is one of the biggest in the Museum’s calendar, with Maypole dancing, Morris-dancing, outdoor theatre and music to mark the arrival of spring as it has traditionally been celebrated throughout the centuries.

Avoncroft is delighted to welcome carnival group The Fabularium with their medieval-style outdoor theatre pageant, ‘Carnival of the Animals’, a unique blend of costume, music, acrobatics, puppetry and story-telling!

Throughout the Museum there will be traditional entertainments and activities for all the family, including have-a-go archery, pony rides and rides on the miniature train.

Costumed re-enactors will be bringing the historic buildings to life with demonstrations, offering a glimpse of May Day customs of times past. A variety of hot and cold refreshments will be available at the Museum, and local cider and perry will be for sale at the cider stall.

Normal Museum admission charges apply with additional charges for some activities. Further information is available at www.avoncroft.org.uk or by calling 01527 831363.
