Mayor gets his flu jab to encourage others to follow suit

The Mayor of Dudley rolled up his sleeves this week to remind people how important it is to get their flu jab.

Councillor David Stanley received his flu jab from pharmacist Karenveer Kallay at the Dudley branch of Boots the Chemist.

With flu hitting many communities hard this winter, it’s important to take steps to keep well. The most vulnerable are able to access flu vaccines, from injections for adults to the painless nasal spray for children.

Flu is a highly infectious disease with symptoms that come on very quickly. The most common symptoms of flu are fever, chills, headache, aches and pains in the joints and muscles, and extreme tiredness. Healthy individuals usually recover within two to seven days, but for some the disease can lead to hospitalisation, permanent disability or even death.

The flu vaccine can significantly reduce the likelihood of catching flu, which is really important for individuals who are most at risk. Anyone over 65, pregnant women, and people with long-term health conditions are all eligible for a free flu jab. It’s completely free and can help people to stay well.

To arrange a free flu vaccination simply speak to your GP or pharmacist. Children aged 2 – 3 and primary school aged children are eligible for free and painless flu sprays through their school, all parents have to do is sign the consent form and it’s all arranged through the school. The Mayor of Dudley, Councillor David Stanley said:

"It’s really important that eligible people of all ages take up the offer of the flu vaccine. It’s completely free and can help protect the most vulnerable people.

"The nasal spray for children is completely painless, while the jab is just a small scratch. I’m really glad I had my jab, it didn’t hurt at all and I hope that me rolling up my sleeves for my jab encourages other people to do the same."

Anyone who is not eligible for the free jab, but would still like the vaccination can pay for it. Speak to your GP or pharmacist for advice.
