Mayor visits school marking D-Day

The Mayor of Dudley has thanked pupils and staff at Hurst Hill Primary School, after she attended their D-Day event last week.

The Coseley school has held the special day, with events and talks throughout the day, to help pupils learn about WWII and the D-Day celebrations.

Children and adults were also given the opportunity to dress in 1940s attire, to help bring the time to life. The Mayor of Dudley Councillor Sue Greenaway said:

"It was such a pleasure to meet pupils and teachers at Hurst Hill today. It’s wonderful to see how the school is sharing it’s local and national history, bringing the past to life.

"Many of the children at school today will never meet people who served in World War II, so it is vital that we pass on the memories and stories of the war time generations."

Claire Johnson, Deputy Head Teacher at Hurst Hill, added: "Pupils had such fun at Hurst Hill, learning about D-Day.

"Historical fact and investigation were the key aims for the day, as well as understanding and celebrating the achievements of those who gave so much for the freedom of our country.

"Children understand that they can be change-makers, playing their part and making 'Our World' a kinder and safer place. We were so pleased that the Mayor of Dudley and our local councillor were also able to join us for our celebrations."
