One of the Dudley town centre stops for the Metro extension will be named after the town’s famous castle, it has been revealed.

The tram will go through the town centre as part of the £449m Wednesbury to Brierley Hill extension.

It will have 17 stops including ones in Dudley town centre, near Dudley Zoo, near the Black Country Living Museum, near Dudley Archives and Museum, and close to Dudley Canal and Tunnel Trust.

Council bosses are proposing to name the stop closest to the zoo on Zoological Way “Dudley Castle”. The initial proposal had been to call it “Station Drive”. The mooted new name will go before Dudley Council’s cabinet at a meeting on Wednesday February 12 for approval. Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of the council, said:

“We anticipate this stop will be one of the busiest on the whole line so it is important we get the name right for it. For many of the visitors to our tourist attractions this stop will represent the start of their first visit to Dudley, so it should not cause confusion.

“Calling it Dudley Castle reflects the proximity of the stop to the castle, as well as its importance to the town as a historical landmark.”
