Netherton Students meet Speaker of the House of Commons

Twenty five learners from The Link Academy enjoyed a special visit to the Houses of Parliament, including a private audience with the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Rt Hon Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP.

The learners travelled from Netherton to Westminster to experience British democracy first-hand. During a guided tour, they explored some of Parliament's most historic spaces, including areas associated with the State Opening of Parliament and the House of Commons Chamber, where MPs debate important national issues.

The standout moment of the visit came when learners were invited to a private audience with Sir Lindsay Hoyle and Cat Eccles MP, giving them the rare opportunity to question the Speaker of the House of Commons directly. During the question-and-answer session, learners gained a deeper understanding of his role, parliamentary traditions and how democracy works in the UK.

Amman Ahmed, Student Parliament Lead at The Link Academy, said: "Having been fortunate enough to become a UK Parliament Teacher Ambassador over the summer, I wanted to use that opportunity to open doors for our learners.

"It is one thing to teach democracy in a classroom, but another for young people from Netherton to walk through Parliament and question the Speaker himself.

"Our Student Parliament is about empowering learners, developing future leaders and showing them that their voices truly matter."

Kate Brown, Behaviour Manager at The Link Academy, added: "What an extraordinary experience for the young people of our academy. To be the first learners in the history of The Link Academy to meet with the Speaker of the House of Commons is a remarkable achievement and something that will stay with us forever.

"I am incredibly proud to work alongside young people who demonstrate such ambition, curiosity and zest for life. As Mrs Edwards-Morgan often reminds our young people, when we work hard, we can achieve anything and today has truly brought that message to life."

The visit also builds on The Link Academy's recent Ofsted success, with inspectors recognising the Strong standard for personal development in its May 2026 inspection.

The Ofsted report highlighted the academy's commitment to enriching learners' experiences, stating: "Leaders have carefully planned a range of trips that enhance the curriculum and give pupils opportunities they may not have experienced."

Through its Student Parliament, The Link Academy continues to champion student voice, active citizenship and leadership, ensuring learners have opportunities to influence their school and wider community.
