Police have received 30 new bleed control cabinets which will help provide life-saving first aid during emergencies across the region.

Officers have worked alongside the Daniel Baird Foundation - which was set up following the 26-year-old's fatal stabbing in Birmingham - to secure funding for the valuable medical packs. They are designed to prevent a catastrophic bleed following trauma or violence and are being shared across our neighbourhood teams to fit in suitable locations.

The first of the cabinets were received and fitted outside Wolverhampton city centre, Bilston and Low Hill police stations with the rest now in the process of being placed at other suitable sites. This ranges from busy locations such as Broad Street, Birmingham city centre and Far Gosford Street in Coventry to residential areas.

Officers from our Project Guardian team - a specialist unit tasked with tackling knife crime and youth violence - have worked alongside the Daniel Baird Foundation to ensure bleed control cabinets are available for cops and the wider public to use.

They're also working with the foundation, West Midlands Ambulance Service and Air Ambulance Service to deliver targeted training to young people locally around how to use the kits.

The foundation was set up in memory of Daniel who was stabbed outside a pub in Digbeth in 2017 and died in hospital after suffering catastrophic bleeding. Superintendent Gareth Morris said:

"These can provide immediate first aid and reduce the chance of serious injury or a fatality. Those first few minutes following a stabbing are crucial, and having these kits available can save lives.

"We're grateful to the support of the Daniel Baird Foundation who are ensuring his memory lives on by helping others."

Daniel's mother Lynne who set up the foundation added: "Many thanks to all of the Project Guardian Team for their exceptionally hard work and commitment with the distribution of these kits,  which should they be needed could ultimately save lives in the event of a catastrophic bleed."
