Dudley Labour has a new look at the top after a change of leader as the group prepares for a new era.

Following a dire 2026 election performance across the UK, Labour in Dudley slipped to becoming the third largest group in the council chamber behind the Conservatives and Reform UK.

Cllr Shaukat Ali has taken over as group leader from Cllr Adam Aston who is understood to have decided to stand down some time before polling day.

Cllr Ali said: “These are difficult times for our borough. Residents deserve a council that listens, delivers, and puts people first.

“Right now, the Conservatives and Reform are the largest groups who will run the council. We will ensure your voices are heard and hold both parties to account.

“We will stand up for our communities with the same determination we always have.”

Cllr Ali was elected unopposed as group leader at Dudley Labour’s AGM on May 8, Cllr Qasim Mughal will take over from his new boss as deputy leader.

It is understood Cllr Aston will remain as a councillor, unconfirmed rumours around the Council House suggest he is interested in becoming the borough’s mayor.

Despite losing their status as the largest opposition group, Labour votes will still be crucial in crunch votes like the budget and it seems they will be taking things on a case by case basis rather than building alliances.

Cllr Ali said: “We are not looking at any formal arrangements, we will see policies and reports as they come along and see which are in the best interests of local people and our residents.”

Both Labour and the Conservatives lost seats on election day to Reform UK, many of their Dudley councillors are new to local government.

Cllr Ali said: “We will see how they perform, I don’t know how it is going to pan out in Dudley.

“As far as Labour is concerned we will stand up for our communities as we have done before, if there is anything that needs to be said – we will say it.”
