Parents are being urged to park responsibly around schools to lessen the risk of accidents as the dark nights draw in.
With the clocks set to go back at the end of the month, Dudley Council is backing the “Be Bright Be Seen” campaign. It urges road users and pedestrians to wear brightly coloured or fluorescent clothing and to use safer places to cross roads.
But a council chief has said parents can also play their part to increase safety, particularly around schools during busy pick up and drop off periods.
Councillor Wayne Little, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “With the dark nights starting to draw in, it is important for pedestrians and road users to remember to be bright and be seen.
“This is particularly important around schools, which can be incredibly busy during drop off and pick up periods. We are seeing an increase in parents and residents contacting councillors to complain about irresponsible parking outside schools.
“Poor parking could severely restrict visibility for people trying to cross roads after coming out of school. With the onset of dark nights as well this could lead to a heightened risk of accidents.
“So I’d urge parents to really think about where they are parking and to do all they can to make it as safe as possible for people getting home from school.”
Top tips on how to Be Bright and Be Seen include:
- Wear brightly coloured or fluorescent clothing that shows up well in daylight and at dusk.
- Wear reflective gear if you’re out when it’s dark to make sure you can be seen when lights shine on you.
- Use accessories – even small items like armbands and stickers can help to make you visible
- If you like to cycle, remember that it’s the law to have clean and working lights at night as well as a rear reflector.
- Always use safer places to cross wherever possible, and make sure your routes are well lit if you’re out when it’s dark
