PCC launches search for next Chief Constable of West Midlands Police

Police and Crime Commissioner, Simon Foster has begun his search for the next Chief Constable of West Midlands Police.

It is the responsibility of the Police and Crime Commissioner to appoint the Chief Constable, as well as preparing the Police and Crime Plan, setting the force budget and holding the Chief Constable to account.

Acting Chief Constable Scott Green has been in post since Craig Guildford retired in January, but now the PCC has opened recruitment for his permanent successor.

The PCC has written to every eligible police officer across the country holding the rank of Assistant Chief Constable or above to invite their interest in the post.  

Mr Foster said: “Chief Constable of West Midlands Police is one of the top jobs in British policing and I am keen to attract a wide field of top quality candidates.

"The next Chief Constable will be responsible for delivering my Police and Crime Plan, including my pledge to continue rebuilding community policing.”

The Chief Constable of West Midlands Police is one of the most important jobs in British policing, heading-up the second largest force in England and Wales and serving a population of over 3 million people. 

The recruitment process will be rigorous and testing, including several rounds of interviews with stakeholders from across the region, before a final Appointment Panel chaired by the Police and Crime Commissioner.

The PCC added: “Appointing a Chief Constable is one of the most important decisions I will make whilst in office.

"I expect the next Chief Constable to prevent and tackle crime, promote community safety and ensure that the people, families, businesses and local communities of the West Midlands are safe and secure.

“The next Chief Constable will play a key role in ensuring all partners and communities across the West Midlands work together effectively, so as to build trust and confidence in our police force. The role is important at local, regional and national levels.”

Applications for thee Chief Constable job have opened and will close at 5pm on July 24, with shortlisted candidates due to be interviewed in September.
