The refurbishment of a grade II listed Greggs next to West Bromwich Albion’s home ground The Hawthorns has been approved by council planners.
A planning application asking for permission to refurbish the Greggs store which sits in the former Hawthorns pub next to West Bromwich Albion’s home ground has been approved by Sandwell Council.
The building, on the corner of Birmingham Road and Halfords Lane, would be refitted with new counters and a renovated kitchen.
New signs and outdoor seating would also be provided. The application by Greggs said the building’s exterior would also be cleaned, repaired and maintained. The designs show a Baggies-themed interior for the West Bromwich store including blue and white seats and photos of past Albion players as well as nods to the Black Country club and the building’s histories.
A statement included in the application said: “No changes are proposed to the exterior with the existing, including air conditioning, previously approved under earlier listed building consents.
“The exception to this is the signage where it is proposed to replace the existing front signage on the porch and provide two additional signs on the side returns of the porch.
“The interior re-fitting works will be replacing modern additions and are necessary due to the wear and tear since the last refit about ten years ago.
“It is not considered that any of the changes are contentious or will impact upon the historic core of the building.
“The works to the upper floor are primarily cosmetic or relate to the addition of freestanding furniture to make better use of this area.”
Famous for its hot and cold baked goods, Greggs opened in the former Hawthorns pub next to the Championship club’s home ground in 2015. The grade II listed building was home to the Baggies’ supporters club before it closed in 2004.
The site was bought by West Bromwich Albion in 2010 and has been used as a fanzone for supporters. Several of the building’s extensions were demolished in 2015.
