Residents urged to help protect green spaces after several fires reported

A Dudley councillor has warned people of the need to take extra care when visiting nature reserves, parks and green spaces following several fires in Dudley borough.

Over the last few weeks, West Midlands Fire Service has attended fires in Dudley Wood, Netherton Park, Netherton Hill at Saltwells, Coombeswood, Cotwall End Valley, Barrow Hill, Wrens Nest and Fens Pools. Fire damage has also been noted at other parks and nature reserves.

The risk of wildfires remains high during the current spell of warm and dry weather, and Dudley Council is reminding visitors that even a small spark can quickly spread through dry grass, heathland and woodland.

Wildfires can destroy areas that have taken years to develop, harming plants and animals, releasing stored carbon into the atmosphere and, in some cases, threaten nearby homes and communities.

Visitors are advised not to use disposable barbecues or light open fires in or near nature reserves, ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished and disposed of safely, and to take all litter home, particularly glass bottles and other items that could contribute to a fire.

People are also encouraged to follow any local advice, warning signs or temporary restrictions during periods of high fire risk.

Councillor Damian Corfield, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: "Our nature reserves and green spaces are some of the borough's most valuable assets, providing important habitats for wildlife and places for residents to enjoy and connect with nature.

"The recent increase in fires is a real concern. A single careless act can have devastating consequences, destroying habitats, putting wildlife at risk and causing damage that can take many years to recover from.

"Most wildfires are preventable, so we're asking everyone to take a few simple precautions when visiting our green spaces this summer. By working together, we can help protect our special places for future generations."

Anyone who discovers a wildfire should move to a safe location immediately and call 999. Providing emergency services with the most accurate location possible will help them respond quickly.
