Wordsley’s Red House Glass Cone is set to stage its first ever Teenage Market this July.
Taking place over the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd, the aim is to give young traders and buskers a chance to showcase their creative products and talents for free.
'The Teenage Market' is a growing nationwide initiative set up by teenage brothers Joe and Tom Barratt in Stockport as a way to support local young people and transform town centres. Its success has already been labeled as innovative and inspiring by retail guru Mary Portas.
Dudley held the area's first ever Teenage Market in 2015 with more than 30 stalls and a range of performers taking over Stone Street Square for the day. Items on sale included clothing, jewellery, cupcakes, handicrafts and more.
Anybody with a talent can get involved; traders and performers simply create a profile on the Teenage Market website. From there they can apply to take part in the Red House Glass Cone’s Teenage Market on Saturday 2 July and Sunday 3 July, either on one or both days. After applying, organisers will contact potential participants to let them know if they’ve been allocated a free stall or performance slot. Cllr Khurshid Ahmed, cabinet member for planning and economic development said:
“The Teenage Market was a huge hit when it came to Dudley and I think that the Red House Glass Cone is an ideal venue for this innovative project. The cone is already a hub for creative industries and has hosted a range of markets and music events over the years.
“It's a great opportunity for young people to get their businesses off the ground, showcase their creative talents and develop self-confidence and interpersonal skills. I’m sure that this event will be a great success with traders, performers and visitors.”
The public are encouraged to support local young traders and performers by visiting the event, wich runs between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 2 July and Sunday 3 July 2016. You can also find out more about The Teenage Market on Twitter.
