Self-taught artist wows with stunning War Memorial sunset painting

Popular self-taught Wordsley artist, Janet Edwards has created a powerful canvas painting of Brierley Hill’s recently restored War Memorial.

Named At The Going Down Of The Sun, the acrylic painting on canvas shows the memorial’s well recognised soldier facing out over a deep sunset.

Inspired by a photograph shared with Janet by local ward councillor Adam Davies, Facebook users described the painting as 'very moving'. Reacting to the image, one user said that Janet's paintings 'never cease to amaze' and another added 'I've yet to see a painting by Janet Edwards that I didn't like. Beautiful'. Janet said:

“I feel very proud of this painting for the reason that it represents a permanent reminder of the sacrifice made by those who served to defend our country. I really enjoyed painting it especially as it has so much meaning – and thank you to Adam for inspiring me to paint this scene.”

Cllr Adam Davies added: “I was almost lost for words when I saw just how brilliantly Janet has managed to capture this poignant scene.

“It’s so important that we continue to remember our fallen heroes and thank those who have served, and still serve, to defend our freedom and way of life. The brilliant work of talented local artists such as Janet helps us to do that.”
