Dudley MP, Sonia Kumar, has welcomed Government action to reduce energy bills, after pressing Ministers in the House of Commons on the impact of fuel poverty across the borough.
During Energy Questions on Tuesday 24 March, Sonia highlighted that around one in five households in Dudley are living in fuel poverty and raised concerns about the disproportionate burden electricity levies place on low-income families.
Ms Kumar said: “In Dudley, too many families are being forced to choose between heating and other essentials. With around one in five households in fuel poverty, this isn’t an abstract issue — it’s a daily reality for people across our communities.
"After years of rising bills and a lack of long-term planning under the previous Conservative Government, families in Dudley were left exposed to the full force of the cost of living crisis.
"I welcome this Government’s decision to rebalance levies on electricity bills — a fairer approach that helps protect households now while supporting the transition to cleaner, more affordable energy."
In response, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband confirmed that from 1 April, the energy price cap will fall by £117, driven by decisions taken in the Budget to ease pressure on households.
Ms Kumar added: “A £117 reduction will make a real difference to families here in Dudley who have been under sustained financial pressure.
"This shows the difference a Labour Government can make — taking action to support working people, rather than leaving them to struggle.
"But there is more to do. I will keep pushing for further action to bring bills down, tackle fuel poverty, and ensure Dudley gets its fair share as we move towards clean energy.
"Because every decision in Westminster must deliver for Dudley.”
