Stourbridge community raises over £12k for school improvements

The local community turned out in force on Saturday to cheer on the brave fire walkers at St James’ C of E Primary School in Stourbridge.

They were joined by local councillors, Andrew Tromans and Jason Griffiths; Stourbridge MP, Cat Eccles MP; Reverend Diane Farmer and Chair of Governors, Lee Salton-McLaughlin.

The current total raised stands at over £12,000 with donations still coming in for a much needed update of the Key Stage 2 toilet block.

As Chair of Governors at St James’s C of E Primary School, Lee Salton-McLaughlin stepped up to the fire walk not only to raise funds but to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the school community.

Lee said: “Taking part in the recent fire walking fundraiser for our school was an unforgettable experience. Standing at the edge of those glowing embers, it wasn’t just about courage, but about community spirit and belief in what we can achieve together.

"The outpouring of support from families, staff, and children on the night was truly inspiring. It showed that when a community comes together, amazing things happen.

"Every volunteer and participant demonstrated positivity, teamwork, and joy — setting a wonderful example to our children about resilience, courage, and working together for a shared goal.

"As Chair of Governors, I couldn’t have been prouder to represent our governing body and to stand alongside such a dedicated team. It was a privilege to be part of something that not only raised funds, but strengthened the sense of unity that makes our school so special.”

For PTFA Chair, Kate Porter, it was a deeply personal milestone and a powerful reminder of how far she has come on her journey. Kate added: “Walking on glass was my biggest hurdle. With the type of obsessions my OCD caused, the idea of something breaking the skin would have sent me into a panic.

"It wasn't until I reflected on the evening that I realized how far I have come on my journey back to mental wellness. It's all a measure of where we were, to where we are now.

"It's been a huge privilege to be part of this. And I am hugely proud of what we have achieved together. I love our school community.”

Not to be outdone the children took part in their own sponsored event; a Lego Walk, raising over £500 in sponsorship. The PTFA would like to say a huge thank you to the wonderful community who supported them in this venture.
