Black Country artist and illustrator, Stacy Hammond has designed a new map which celebrates Stourbridge’s music scene, past and present.
More than 1000 copies of the map have been printed and will be distributed to Stourbridge Town Rail Station, Record Culture on Market Street and various other locations in and around the town centre.
The initiative has been spearheaded by Cllr Andew Tromans who represents Wollaston and Stourbridge Town and generously sponsored by PreMetro Operations who run the Stourbridge Shuttle rail service, local businessman David Sheppard and Direct2Print based on Foster Street.
Cllr Andrew Tromans said: “Growing up in Stourbridge, stories about where Robert Plant frequented are almost as common as those about where Charles II stopped in his escape after the battle of Worcester.
“Our town has a rich cultural history and thriving entertainment scene today. This project is all about telling that story and putting Stourbridge back on the map. The hope is that we may be able to generate some renewed interest in the place.
“I would like to thank our sponsors and everyone who contributed their knowledge towards this project.”
The map depicts iconic Stourbridge music venues, both current and historic, such as The Mitre, Town Hall and Katie Fitzgerald’s. Rehearsal spaces such as Base Studios on Rufford Road and the now demolished ‘Ice House’ are also featured on the map.
Record stores, music shops, pubs playing live music as well as venues which have ceased to exist are all represented on the music scene map created by Stourbridge-based artist Stacy Hammond.
The recently installed murals celebrating bands from the ‘Stourbridge Scene’ such as The Wonder Stuff, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin and Pop Will Eat Itself have been incorporated into Stacy’s design.
Stacy Hammond said “When Cllr Andrew Tromans approached me for this project, I jumped at the chance - I adore Stourbridge’s music history and, with my husband’s band Mystiek recently playing Claptrap the Venue, it felt perfect. I just wanted to put Stourbridge music on the map for all to appreciate.”
Stacy is well-known for her detailed illustrations of maps and landmarks in the Black Country, sharing the stories and memories attached to these places.
Her art is inspired by Stourbridge and its incredible community, Stacy is passionate about celebrating what the town means to so many people.
