A West Midlands Ambulance Service Student Paramedic is walking nearly 100 miles to raise awareness for baby loss.
Maria Webb, based at Sandwell hub, set out from Himley Hall yesterday on a week-long trek to Barmouth Beach in Wales.
She'll camp overnight along the way and is joined by her friend, Vicky. Maria hopes to encourage people to talk openly about baby loss, raise awareness and show solidarity with families affected.
The duo are fundraising for the maternity bereavement department at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital and, with more than £1,000 already raised and local campsites donating free overnight stays, the walk has inspired widespread support even before the first step has been taken.
Maria said: "It’s about giving people the courage to talk openly about their experiences, sharing stories and reminding everyone affected by baby loss that they are not alone.
“We want to provide however much we can for some new equipment, a gym membership, family holidays or anything at all to help rebuild their lives following loss.
“I’m feeling very nervous but also, very excited. It has been challenging juggling the training with all my night shifts lately, as I have just started on the road as part of my Student Paramedic training but I’m eager to get going now!”
Throughout the week, Maria will share daily updates on social media, featuring walkers who are bravely opening up about their own experiences; be it as parents, grandparents, friends or professionals.
She is inviting anyone who wishes to join her for part of the journey, no matter how short, to add their voice.
