A peri-peri takeaway restaurant in Walsall has been granted permission to open until 3am, seven days a week, despite an objection from a community group.
Merigo on West Bromwich Street, Caldmore, had previously been operating until 3am without a late-night refreshment licence.
Walsall Council’s licensing officers attended the branch, owned by MG Walsall Ltd, where they were told bosses weren’t aware a licence was needed.
Director Adrian Tworkowski submitted the application which led to an objection from Palfrey and Caldmore Neighbourhood Watch and Residents Group vice chairman, Mr Mohamed.
Speaking on behalf of residents he described the proposed operating hours as ‘wholly inappropriate’, raising concerns about late-night noise, nuisance customers, litter, odour and traffic.
But members of the licensing and safety committee heard that when further information or evidence was requested from the objector, none was provided.
Mr Mohamed did not attend the committee meeting on Thursday, June 4, so members said they could only put ‘very little weight’ on the objection.
Councillors decided to grant the application with several conditions, one of them being a litter pick twice a day, once at opening and once at closing time.
