Ten year ban after dogs and puppies neglected

A man who neglected dogs in his care has been banned from keeping animals for ten years.

Amarjit Chopra of Curzon Street, Wolverhampton, pleaded guilty to two animal welfare offences, following an investigation and prosecution by the RSPCA.

A female rottweiler, a male German Shepheard, and five Rottweiler puppies were rescued after being found living in squalid conditions alongside the bodies of dead dogs.

RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer, Ash Moore, who investigated for the animal welfare charity, said: “The whole property was covered with dog faeces and rubbish, the first room also contained multiple plastic bottles filled with urine.

Moving into the second room where there was a dog crate filled with faeces and the skeletal remains of a dog. Also present was a treadmill with a dog lead and collar attached.

The police had entered shortly beforehand, and had removed the live dog which had been tethered to the treadmill, by the side of the cage which contained the remains of a dog.

A spokespoerson said: “The first floor consisted of two bedrooms and a bathroom. The first bedroom at the top of the stairs was also absolutely saturated with dog faeces with the remains of a dog.

"The second bedroom and bathroom was consistent with the rest of the property covered in faeces and rubbish.”

The vet who examined the dogs found both adults to be malnourished and emaciated. Both gained weight with the correct food and care and all the dogs, including the puppies, were rehomed by the charity.

In mitigation, it was said he was looking after the dogs for a friend and acknowledged that he fell significantly short in dealing with the animals. He said at the time he was struggling with anxiety and depression and had very little income and went without food.

Alongside the ten year animal disqualification,  which  he can not appeal to be lifted for five years, he was also sentenced to a 12 month community order with 20 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days and a £70 fine.

He was also ordered to pay £50 costs and a £114 victim surcharge when he was sentenced at Birmingham Magistrates Court on September 26.
