A search has begun for a West Midlands performer who could play the part of Jean Valjean in a production of the iconic Les Misérables at The Alexandra, Birmingham in June next year.

Les Misérables has been performed professionally across the world, but never before has the show been made available for performance by adult amateur groups.

Now, to mark the show's 40th anniversary in 2025, Cameron Mackintosh has released the rights for 11 amateur companies across the UK to present a special version of the show: Les Misérables – Let the People Sing!

Birmingham's BMOS Musical Theatre Company has been chosen as the lead group to produce the show in Birmingham, in collaboration with three other regional theatre companies.

The search is now on to find the right person to play the main character - Jean Valjean. It's a major role appearing throughout the show. The role needs someone aged 35-40s who is a high tenor.

Applicants for the role are asked to go to the BMOS Website to find out more about the audition process and apply. The show costs for the successful candidate will be covered as part of a sponsorship package for the production.

BMOS Musical Theatre Company Chair, Pat Pryce, said: "This is a unique opportunity to take part in this iconic show. It has never been available for amateur performance, and we are delighted to be bringing it to the stage of The Alexandra."

"Jean Valjean is a major part but we are sure there is someone in the West Midlands who will be perfect for the part. If you have never performed in public before, don't be deterred – you could be the right person to fill the role."
