A councillor for Dudley town centre says crime is on the rise and causing decline in the area.

Cllr Caroline Reid, who represents the St James’s ward, is calling for action to tackle yobs on the streets and in the market place.

Cllr Reid also highlighted places on King Street which she says are gathering points for drug users while shoppers and traders are being intimidated by antisocial behaviour.

Cllr Reid said: “I have seen before my eyes the decline of Dudley town centre.

“Antisocial behaviour is rife, there have been serious incidents, the market is in a state and shoplifting is on the increase.

“Violent crime remains a major concern. A further stabbing recently took place in the town centre, adding to fears about public safety in the night-time economy.

“There must be serious consideration of the repercussions of these incidents on public confidence, local businesses, and the future of our town centre.”

Dudley Central sergeant Chris Pyke, from West Midlands Police, said: “We never underestimate the impact of antisocial behaviour (ASB) and the impact it has on people’s lives and those who live and work in our communities.

“We actively look to deal with any issues reported to us and in Dudley town centre have two dedicated neighbourhood PCSOs and two PCs who monitor the area, help tackle crime and who are also assisted by Dudley response officers, the wider neighbourhood teams and other specialist units.

“Tackling antisocial behaviour remains a priority for us in Dudley and we conduct regular targeted patrols in hotspot areas, engage with the public and businesses, and also work together alongside Dudley Council street wardens.”

Dudley Council has introduced Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO) which give police extra powers to stop groups or individuals who are causing problems and issue fixed penalty notices of £100 or send people to court to face fines of up to £1,000.

Cllr Damian Corfield, Dudley cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “We want everyone who lives, works and visits Dudley borough to feel safe and supported as they go about their daily lives.

“Our message is clear; antisocial behaviour has no place in our community and these new PSPOs demonstrate our commitment to tackling those who cause a nuisance and distress to others.”

Sgt Pyke added: “This gives us extra power to tackle issues and drive drown ASB and criminal acts.

“We would ask anyone with any concerns to get in touch with us or attend one of our police surgeries that are advertised on our website and WMNow and speak to officers to relay any concerns they may have.

“Even if the issue doesn’t directly affect them, we still want to listen and act to keep our communities safe.”
