Tributes have been paid to Peter Snape, the Right Honourable Lord Snape of Wednesbury, who has died at the age of 84.
He served as the Member of Parliament for West Bromwich East from 1974 until 2001, before being made a life peer in the House of Lords in 2004.
A former railwayman, Lord Snape was also an Honorary Freeman of Sandwell, a title awarded in 2009 for his outstanding service to the borough over many decades.
Councillor Ray Nock, Leader of Sandwell Council, said: “This is very sad news. On behalf of everyone at the council, I offer my thoughts and condolences to Lord Peter Snape’s family, friends and colleagues.
“I had huge respect for Peter – he was my constituency MP for many years. He was a hard-working MP dedicated to serving his constituents and the people of Sandwell.”
Councillor Paul Moore, the Leader of the Opposition Group, added: “I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Lord Peter Snape. Peter was a passionate advocate for the communities he served and a powerful voice helping to improve Sandwell.
"As an Honorary Freeman of Sandwell, Peter held a special place in our borough's history. His contribution to public life will be long remembered."
The Sandwell flag at the Council House in Oldbury has been lowered as a mark of respect following Lord Snape’s death.
