Update on multi-million-pound investment plans for Dudley

An update on plans which will see up to £20 million of investment over the next ten years in a defined area of the borough will go before cabinet this week.

Running from Priory to Dudley Wood, and incorporating Dudley town centre, the area is one of 75 in England to benefit from the central government’s ‘Plan for Neighbourhoods’ programme.

A Dudley Neighbourhood Board has been set up to manage the funds and is made up of community groups, community representatives, politicians, the police, anchor institutions and businesses operating in the area and is closely supported by Dudley Council.

At its meeting on July 30, Dudley Council’s cabinet members will be updated on the programme and hear the board will focus on a community led engagement approach to understand local priorities to help shape it.

Engagement work is already underway with representatives from 18 community groups, who have trained to lead engagement conversations, and a survey is open until September 12 for residents, businesses and stakeholders to share their views on priorities for the programme.

Money can be spent on a wide range of things aligned to three goals of the programme: thriving places, stronger communities and taking back control.

Identified themes cover public spaces, high streets and heritage, housing, skills, employability and business growth, community cohesion, health and wellbeing, transport, safety and security, families, and early years and education.

Councillor Simon Phipps, cabinet member for development and regulation, said: “This ten-year, £20 million programme puts local people and their priorities at the centre of the process.

“I would encourage anyone who lives or works in the defined area to take part in the survey and share their views before September 12.”

People can find out more about the programme and take part in the survey at regeneratingdudley.org.uk. The survey will also be posted through letter boxes in the defined area over the summer months.
