Labour suffered crushing losses in Wolverhampton as rampant Reform UK claimed 12 of the 21 seats up for grabs in the city to become the majority opposition group on the council.
The ruling group lost a total of 10 seats to Reform, who also claimed the vacant seat in Wednesfield South – vacated by former Labour mayor Greg Brackenbridge – as well as claiming one from the Tories.
This means Labour now hold 35 seats while Reform have a total of 13, with the Conservative down to 10 and two independents making up the rest of the 60-seat authority.
A high profile casualty came in the Fallings Park ward where Labour’s Chris Burden, Cabinet Member for City Development, Jobs and Skills, lost his seat to Stu Goldsmith of Reform.
The city’s outgoing mayor Craig Collingwood narrowly held on to his Park seat for Labour with 1,089 votes – just 43 more than the Green Party’s Mohammed Naseem – following a recount.
There was also a recount in Tettenhall Regis where Conservative Sohail Khan retained by a narrow margin of 37 votes ahead of Reform’s Theresa D’Cruze.
