Sandwell Council's Youth Service has been shortlisted for the Children and Young People Now Awards in the Workforce Development category, for its “Grow Our Own” Youth Work Volunteer Programme.
The programme, developed and delivered by Sandwell Youth Service, has transformed how youth work volunteers are recruited, supported and progressed into paid roles.
Over the past 18 months, 27 active volunteers have contributed more than 2,000 hours of youth work, with several going on to secure employment in youth services, education and community roles.
Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Families, Jalal Uddin, said: “This nomination is a testament to the dedication of our youth service team and the incredible volunteers who give their time to support young people across Sandwell.
"The Grow Our Own programme reflects our commitment to a Child Friendly Sandwell – where every young person is supported by skilled, passionate adults who understand their needs and aspirations.
"By investing in volunteers and creating clear pathways into youth work, we’re not only strengthening our workforce but also empowering our communities.”
The programme was created to address long-standing recruitment challenges and has since become a model of best practice. Volunteers receive tailored training, supervision and development opportunities, with many progressing into paid roles or further education.
The initiative also aligns with Sandwell’s Child Friendly principles by:
- Creating opportunities for adults to support young people in safe, inclusive environments.
- Building resilience and confidence among volunteers, many of whom have overcome personal challenges.
- Embedding youth voice and participation in service delivery.
- Strengthening community connections through partnerships with local organisations.
The success of Grow Our Own has led to further investment, with plans to expand the programme to include young people aged 16–18 and explore volunteering pathways in other service areas such as communications, outdoor learning and administration.
Sandwell Council congratulates the Youth Service team and all volunteers involved in this outstanding achievement.
The Children and Young People Now Award ceremony will take place on 20 November 2025.
