Duchess of Edinburgh tours world's oldest river gunboat, built in UK, during Peru visit

The Duchess of Edinburgh toured the world's oldest river gunboat, which was built in the UK over 100 years ago, on the second day of her visit to Peru.

Sophie was taken on a tour of the BAP America during a visit to the Iquitos Naval Base on the second day of her visit to South and Central America, which includes stops in Panama, Guatemala and Belize.

The ship was built in Birkenhead, near Liverpool, in 1904 and served in the Peruvian navy's Amazon flotilla.

On the first day of her visit, the duchess visited women from the indigenous Awajun, Shipibo-Konibo and Kukama Kukamiria tribes.

During their meeting, the women discussed the role they have played in defending women's rights in Peru, and the importance of women's leadership roles in territorial governance.

Sophie also learned about their contributions to tackling environmental crime and climate change.

Photos also show the duchess taking a tour of the Amazon rainforest.

On a biodiversity nature walk, Sophie encountered a Goliath birdeater spider and a green Anaconda snake.

The duchess's next stops will be Panama, Guatemala and Belize.
