Rapist who abducted girl, 15, at knifepoint from bus stop and attacked her in basement lair is jailed

A rapist who abducted a 15-year-old girl at knifepoint from a bus stop and attacked her in his basement lair was told he may never be released from prison.

Aaron Strachan was handed a lifelong sentence with a minimum of five years in jail - an indeterminate sentence that means an offender is not released until deemed to no longer pose a risk to the public.

The 21-year-old wore a balaclava when he stalked his teenage victim in Edinburgh on 25 May 2025.

He then pulled a knife on her and marched her through the streets to his filthy basement in York Place, where he dragged his blade down a wall before raping her.

He then warned her not to tell anyone and forced the girl to show him her bus pass so he could learn her name to be able to find her.

The teenager told her mother about the attack and Strachan was arrested days later while hiding behind bushes in the city's Dalry area.

Judge Michael O'Grady KC previously compared Strachan's actions to a "wild animal stalking its prey".

He added: "This is the stuff of nightmares for every woman, every young girl, and every parent who waits at home for their child to return safe. This child did not return safe."

The judge told Strachan: "You are likely to remain in prison for many years, if indeed you are ever released."

The violent criminal, who was also sentenced for knifing a man and a claw hammer attack on another, escaped from custody following a hearing at the High Court in Edinburgh in January.

He slipped his handcuffs off as he was being taken to a police van and ran off towards the city centre.

A manhunt was launched and he was apprehended by police a few hours later.

Strachan has now been handed an order for lifelong restriction (OLR) - a sentence with a minimum jail term that is usually reserved for the most serious court cases in Scotland that do not involve murder.

Judge O'Grady said: "The word predatory is perhaps overused in these courts, but it is an inescapable adjective to describe this truly bestial crime.

"You left your lair and went out hunting for a vulnerable victim. Finding one, you stalked her, threatened her at knifepoint and took her to a dingy basement and raped her."

The judge said he was in no doubt that as Strachan "dragged her along the street she knew what was about to befall her".

Strachan pleaded guilty to abducting and raping the teenager at a court hearing in December.

He also admitted two further serious assault charges against two male victims.

This included repeatedly stabbing one man on the hand with a knife in an "unprovoked" attack just hours before the rape, and hitting another man on the head with a claw hammer, leaving him "semi-conscious" on the ground and suffering seizures.

The second man who was attacked on 28 May, was later found to have a suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain, with the judge saying the consequences of the attack for the man had been "catastrophic".

At Strachan's sentencing at the High Court in Edinburgh on Monday, he additionally pleaded guilty to attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

As well as the OLR, he was also placed on the sex offenders' register indefinitely.

Strachan, who remained handcuffed to security officers throughout the hearing, showed no reaction as the sentence was handed down.

Faye Cook, procurator fiscal for high court sexual offences, said: "Aaron Strachan's actions in abducting his victim before raping her were calculated, predatory, and caused profound harm.

"Although this type of stranger offending is rare, this conviction reflects the gravity of his crimes and the commitment of prosecutors and police to bring him to justice.

"Sexual violence and the use of weapons to intimidate and harm have no place in our society.

"We will continue to take action against perpetrators while supporting victims throughout the prosecution process."
