Tenerife footballer Jesus de Miguel, 30, dies after on-field collision

Tenerife football player Jesus de Miguel has died after suffering a cardiac arrest following an on-field collision in a match on Monday.

The incident occurred as Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono raced from his goal to challenge De Miguel for the ball during a Spanish second-tier game.

In a statement, his club CD Tenerife said: "Heartbroken, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, we at CD Tenerife announce the tragic passing, on Tuesday 3 November 2026 at 8am (7am UK time), of Jesus de Miguel Alameda.

"There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can ease this overwhelming sense of sadness. We stand with his devastated family, with his loved ones, and with the entire Tenerife footballing community, who today mourn this cruel turn of events.

"The family of Jesus de Miguel would like to thank everyone for their expressions of support and, from the bottom of their hearts, ask that their privacy be respected at this terrible time."

Late on Monday night, Tenerife issued a statement confirming De Miguel had been admitted to hospital and was initially described as "stable despite the severity of his condition".

However, in an update in the early hours of Tuesday morning, the club confirmed his condition had "worsened neurologically".

Owono was immediately sent off after he rushed out of his goal to challenge De Miguel in the centre circle - the third red card of the game.

The Tenerife striker, who joined CD Tenerife last year, was taken to hospital with head and chest injuries after the contact.

The match was suspended after the incident.

Andorra issued a statement on X which read: "With broken hearts and devastated, we want to send our most sincere condolences to the family of Jesus de Miguel, to all his teammates, friends, and to CD Tenerife. Rest in peace."

English clubs Manchester United and Liverpool joined in offering their condolences on social media.

The Spanish soccer federation postponed two Copa del Rey matches and one Copa de la Reina match to be held on Tuesday.

Spanish police have since opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter.

Judicial authorities in the Canary Islands said the opening of an investigation into the death of De Miguel was a routine procedure because any death deemed non-natural under Spanish law automatically triggers a judicial inquiry.
