If you’re looking for a night at the theatre that’s equal parts gripping, stylish, and unnervingly relevant, the stage adaptation of Single White Female at the The Alexandra Theatre delivers in spades.

The show is based on the 1992 film starring Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh. It follows recently estranged Allison Jones, who begins to rent a room to Hedra Carlson - however, after she reconciles with her ex-boyfriend she begins to find strange patterns of behaviour in her tenant.
This bold reimagining feels completely at home in 2026. Updated for the age of social media, online personas, and digital obsession, the production cleverly taps into modern anxieties - where identity is curated, privacy is fragile, and boundaries are easily blurred.

At the heart of it all are two superb performances. Lisa Faulkner brings warmth and authenticity to Allie, making her instantly relatable as a single mother trying to rebuild her life while launching a tech business. Opposite her, Kym Marsh is utterly magnetic as Hedy - charming, vulnerable, and quietly menacing. Her performance simmers with tension, revealing layers of obsession that creep in almost unnoticed until it’s too late.
There should also be a noteable mention for a stand-out performance from Amy Snudden as Bella who went from stroppy teenager to petrified daughter in a heartbeat and gave the performance of her life.
What makes this production especially compelling is how seamlessly it translates the story to a contemporary setting. The influence of Instagram, dating apps, and digital identity adds a chilling plausibility to Hedy’s behaviour and what once felt extreme now feels disturbingly possible.

There's also so much to be said for the staging which is an element often overlooked in plays when you compare them to big West End musical transfers. The set is sleek and atmospheric and the lighting and sound heighten the sense of unease, but without ever overwhelming the performances.
Above all, this is a thriller that truly engages. It’s suspenseful, emotionally grounded, and packed with twists that keep you guessing. Single White Female is a smart, modern revival that proves some stories only get sharper with age.
It plays at Birmingham's Alexandra Theatre until Saturday 9th May 2026. For more information, or to get your tickets, head to atgtickets.com/birmingham.
