A teenager has died and another has been left seriously injured after a car hit a wall in Wolverhampton in the early hours of yesterday morning.

It happened off Merridale Road, near the junction of Oaks Drive at around 1:45am. An 18-year-old passenger was sadly confirmed dead at the scene and the 18-year-old driver has been taken to hospital in a critical condition.

A cordon remained in place while officers from the serious collision investigation unit carried out enquiries to establish exactly what happened.

Members of the pubic are asked not to speculate at this stage but anyone with information should contact officers as soon as possible. A force spokesperson said:

"Our thoughts are with their loved ones and we'll be offering them support at this terrible time.

"We're keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and saw the red Vauxhall Corsa. We're particularly keen to secure any dash cam footage.

"You can contact us via Live Chat on our website and quote log 295 of 17 April."
