Football fans across Dudley borough are being urged to keep their eye on the ball as football fever grips the nation.
Fans are being reminded to watch what they’re drinking while they take in their feast of football. Dudley’s community safety partnership, 'safe & sound', is encouraging sports fans to drink responsibly during the European Championships to avoid becoming a victim or perpetrator of crime.
The reminder also comes with a warning of the spike in incidents of domestic abuse which often coincides with major football tournaments and many of the offenders are found to be under the influence of alcohol. Councillor Gaye Partridge, cabinet member responsible for community safety, said:
“Most people are really looking forward to the European Championships and can’t wait to watch the games. We want to make sure things don’t get out of hand in pubs and homes where people are having a drink and watching the game.”
“I would urge people to drink sensibly to avoid being the victim or the perpetrator of crime.”
Inspector Phil Jones, West Midlands Police added:
“Statistically there is a seasonal rise in violent crime during the summer months, often when international football competitions take place. I would urge people to drink sensibly to avoid being the victim or the perpetrator of crime.”
