Mental health support during lockdown

People can find advice and support on how to look after their mental health during the latest pandemic lockdown.

Dudley Council’s cabinet member for health and adult social care has highlighted how mental health is just as important as physical care.

It comes after a study was published last month led by the University of Glasgow, which showed that the first lockdown had a major impact on the UKs mental health.

Top tips for looking after mental health are:

  1. Stay connected with others. Being in lockdown need not mean isolation. Residents are encouraged to talk to or see friends or family by phone or using electronic devices, or to meet one person outside following the lockdown rules
  2. Be physically active. Even small amounts of exercise can improve mood
  3. As far as possible, carry on doing things that you enjoy
  4. Most importantly, anyone who is experiencing mental health problems should ask for help as soon as possible. Professional support is available

Councillor Nicolas Barlow, cabinet member for health and adult social care, said:

“Lockdown is hard, especially for the second time. Some people are reporting feeling hopeless and lonely. I urge everyone not only to look after themselves but to look out for others during these tricky times.

“Fantastic advice is available to help us all remain positive. But more than anything else I urge anyone who is having difficulties or worries to reach out for assistance.

“Anyone who requires urgent mental health support can call a 24/7 phone line provided by Black Country Healthcare Foundation Trust on 0800 008 6516.”

Adults aged over 60 or with physical or sensory disabilities can also call the council’s ‘Pleased to Meet You’ scheme. The helpline offers a friendly chat, or the chance to find out about help in the local area, including assistance arranging for grocery or medicine supplies to be dropped off.

The helpline can be reached on 01384 812761 (Monday to Friday between 9am to 4pm).
