Police appeal as search widened in Walsall disorder

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward as a teenager remains in a critical condition after disorder broke out at a boxing event in Walsall Town Hall last night.

A 19-year-old local man remains in hospital with a neck injury after the violence spilled out onto the street around 11.30pm. Detective Inspector Ian Wilkins in leading the investigation. He said:

"We have widened our cordon following an initial examination to search for potentially discarded weapons and any other evidence which can lead us to those involved.

"A young man is in a critical condition with a serious neck injury. Several others received less serious injuries and we are keen to establish what caused the disorder. I would like to hear from anyone who witnessed what happened or anyone who may have captured it on their mobile phones."

Several streets remain closed to traffic as the searches continue and Walsall Library has closed for the day as it falls within the cordon. A further boxing event planned for this evening has been cancelled by the promoters.

Detectives are continuing to trawl CCTV from the surrounding area and several witnesses have already been spoken to.
