Rogue builder lied about TV appearance

A rogue builder from Stourbridge who lied about appearing on TV, and conned customers across the Black Country out of £140,000 has been jailed for five years.

40 year-old James Carter boasted that his roofing business featured on the BBC show DIY SOS, but it was a lie to win customers, many of whom were left with leaking or half-finished roofs.

Stafford Crown Court heard how Carter let his victims believe he was a skilled roofer and builder but he was in fact "grossly incompetent”, If customers complained, he often used threats and intimidation.

The court heard Carter, of Vicarage Road, Wollaston, appeared to have no qualifications to undertake building or roofing works and customers often had to pay out more to remedy the work he did through his firm Central Roofing Services.
