Four arrested and two in critical condition after violent clashes in South Wales

Four men have been arrested and two are in critical condition in hospital after violent disorder in South Wales.

The disturbance involved a group of men in Pontnewynydd, near Pontypool, at around 7.15pm on Thursday, Gwent Police said.

Firearms officers and the National Police Air Service supported police officers in Mill Road.

Two of those arrested are in police custody, while three men were taken to hospital - with two in a critical condition.

Detective Chief Superintendent Anne-Marie Salwey said: "Violence in any form is completely unacceptable... we will not accept this behaviour in our communities.

"We recognise that reports of this nature will prompt concern from our residents and it is likely that you will see officers in and around the area conducting enquiries as part of this investigation."

Police have asked for anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage from the area around Hospital Road and Mill Road between 7pm and 7.30pm on Thursday to get in touch.

The road between Mill Road and Hospital Road remained closed early on Friday with diversions in place.
